I love the season of Christmas. It is a wonderful reminder of how far God is willing to go to demonstrate his love for us. It is also a reminder of how he can use the most marginal people of society to impact the entire world. Just think of all of the characters that show up around the birth of Jesus. You have a teenage mom and a blue-collar dad, shepherds who were considered by society to be dirty and religiously unclean, and foreigners from a far off land bringing him his first gifts. Each of these folks saw that God was doing something amazing in the world and responded.
Consider Mary
She heard the call of God. Granted, it was a pretty amazing and spectacular message delivery with the angel and all (Luke 1:26-38). When Mary heard the call, she had a choice to make. How would she respond? Look at what she said to the angel when he told her that she would have a child who would be called the “Son of God.”
“I am the Lord’s servant. May it be to me as you have said”
(Luke 1:38).
Mary said yes.
Think of the immensity of her response. When she said yes, she said it with her whole life. When she accepted the call to bring the Son of God into the world, it would change her entire world. She could not choose to be a mother one day a week or only when she felt like it. She accepted the entire package and not just the package of motherhood. She accepted a life that placed her smack dab in the middle of the movement of God. She also found herself in the middle of a world that did not fully understand what God was doing and how she was being used, so to many she was an outcast.
God asks nothing less from us. He calls each of us to respond to him. The call is for our entire lives. It is for us, like Mary, to be smack dab in the middle of his movement and mission, even if the rest of the world (and those closest to you) do not understand. How will you respond? Responding to God’s call to follow his Son, Jesus, will change your life forever!
